Care & Materials

Woven fibre is a natural material. Treated reasonably, it lasts decades. Most damage comes from two things: water left sitting, and heat that dries the fibre out.

Rattan and cane

  • Dust regularly with a dry, soft brush. A vacuum brush attachment on low suction works well on open weave.
  • For marks, wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not soak, and do not leave a piece wet.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sun. Sustained UV bleaches the colour and makes fibre brittle.
  • Keep away from radiators, heaters and air conditioning outlets. Dry heat is harder on woven fibre than humidity.
  • If a piece has dried out and feels stiff, a light mist of water and a slow air dry can restore some flexibility.
  • Only sit or stand on pieces rated to take weight. Check the product page.

Bamboo

  • Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry straight away.
  • Never put bamboo in a dishwasher, and never leave it soaking. Both cause splitting.
  • For items used with food, an occasional coat of food-safe mineral oil keeps the surface sealed and stops it drying out.
  • Avoid standing water underneath trays and boards.

What is normal

Colour varies between pieces and within a single piece. Joins, small irregularities in the weave, and slight differences in tone between one basket and the next are characteristics of the material, not faults. Natural finishes deepen slightly with age and light.
